Starting a Regenerative Garden

This method, popularized by John Jeavons in his book "How to Grow More Vegetables," focuses on creating deep, fertile soil beds that promote optimal root growth and plant productivity. In this step-by-step guide, we'll walk you through the process of starting a double-dig raised bed for your garden.
The steps below on creating a Double-dig raised bed are from my favorite book How to Grow More Vegetables.
Materials Needed:
- Garden fork
- Shovel
- Compost
- Organic amendments (if necessary)
- Mulch or cover crop seeds (optional)
Step 1: Choose the Location Select a sunny spot in your garden that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Ensure that the area is clear of any obstructions such as rocks, roots, or large debris.
Step 2: Mark the Bed Dimensions Determine the desired size and shape of your raised bed. Use stakes or strings to mark the perimeter of the bed on the ground.
Step 3: Dig the Trench Using a garden fork, dig a trench along one side of the marked bed, approximately one shovel's depth deep. Place the excavated soil aside, creating a mound alongside the trench.
Step 4: Loosen the Soil With the garden fork, loosen the soil at the bottom of the trench by gently lifting and breaking up any compacted layers. This process allows for better root penetration and drainage.
Step 5: Amend the Soil Add compost and any organic amendments (such as well-rotted manure or aged garden waste) to the loosened soil in the trench. These additions enhance the soil's fertility and provide a nutrient-rich environment for plant growth. Mix the amendments thoroughly into the soil.
Step 6: Dig the Second Trench Move to the adjacent side of the marked bed and dig a second trench, placing the excavated soil onto the first trench's mound. Repeat the process of loosening the soil and incorporating compost and amendments into the second trench.
Step 7: Repeat the Process Continue digging alternate trenches and incorporating compost and amendments until you reach the end of the bed. Ensure that each new trench is dug into the previous trench's mound, gradually building up the bed's height.
Step 8: Smooth and Shape the Bed Once all the trenches have been dug and amended, smooth out the soil surface, removing any large clumps or rocks. Shape the bed's sides and top to create a neat and defined raised bed structure.
Step 9: Optional - Add Mulch or Plant Cover Crop To further enhance soil fertility and protect the bed, consider adding a layer of organic mulch (such as straw or shredded leaves) to suppress weeds and retain moisture. Alternatively, sow cover crop seeds to nourish the soil and prevent erosion during the bed's initial establishment phase.
Step 10: Plant and Maintain Your double-dig raised bed is now ready for planting! Follow your preferred planting schedule and choose vegetable varieties suited to your climate and preferences. Remember to provide regular watering, weeding, and maintenance as needed to ensure healthy plant growth.
